Mornings with Brunner - The Mysterious God

If somebody speaks about God as he speaks about his cousin he knows nothing about God. We do not know anything about God unless he reveals it to us. When he reveals himself to us we understand, again, how inaccessible is he for our thinking. He is above our world. He is a mystery. We are not able to unlock the mystery about him. Never.
The greatness of God is like a deep hole. When we contemplate the mysterious God we see ourselves small and hopeless. The holiness of God makes us humble. God sees everything and he judges us. He is the Lord. He wants something from us. This will of God is absolute. He wants to be the Lord of all. The holiness of God is like a wave which, when touches somebody it kills him. When we do not want what he wants in an absolute way, we will be crushed to pieces. God is against the proud. This unconditional faithfulness of God is the hope of salvation for the world. Without it, everything fall into chaos. The righteousness of God is like a mountain. The person who opposes God will crush himself into him.
But the mystery of God is even greater. What he wants in an absolute way is to love. What he feels for us is an infinite love. He is ready to give himself for us, to draw us unto him and to bound us to him. He wants communion/fellowship with us. He created us to have fellowship with him. He is like a mother searching for his rebellious son. Nobody can stop her. This is the mercy of God. To understand the love of God we have to look both to this unending search full of mercy, and to his greatness and holiness. The heavenly king, whose greatness can not be comprehended by men, is coming down from heaven to search for his unfaithful children - this is the love of God.
God wants one thing in an absolute way: that we should know the greatness and the deepness of his love, and to let ourselves led by it. Our hearts are like fortress God wants to conquer through his love. If we open the gate it will be good for us, but if we don't, we will be under his wrath.
